The story of Brad Whiteway

I’m Brad Whiteway. I’ve been in the tyre industry for 35 years. Twenty-one of those as a service fitter. Nearly 14 years ago, I was involved in a 17 vehicle pile-up, between Hervey Bay and Maryborough, in Queensland.

I was on my way to work, to a transport depot, where I used to look after their truck tyres. The morning was extremely foggy, and smoke from a bush fire the day before became mixed with the fog. This reduced visibility to zero. I was trapped in my service vehicle and had to be cut free.

I was the most injured person involved in the accident, and thankfully no one died. I broke 66 bones and died 6 times, as a result of my injuries. I have no recollection of the accident and was in a coma for around 1 month. I have 3rd degree burns, among the 16 injuries that could have ended my life.

I spent the first 13 months in different hospitals and had 2 amputations on my left leg. I have multiple injuries that create constant pain all of the time. Yet, through mental strength, I’ve been able to beat all of my medications and hurdles thrown at me.

My doctor used my story in an Australian Medical Journal, referring to my drive and mental strength in giving up all narcotics etc with the power of my mind and will to live. I now tell my story as motivation to everyone that you can achieve anything you want to in life. All you have to do is focus on what your goals are, and you will achieve a positive outcome.
